Google Named Best Place to Work in America
Google has a new weapon in the intense war for engineering talent in Silicon Valley: The search giant on Thursday was named by Fortune magazine as the best place to work in America. Google capped a year when it hired about 7,000 people, the most intense growth spurt in the search giant’s 13-year history, with perhaps the pre-eminent human relations title in corporate America, moving up from fourth to first on Fortune’s annual pecking order of the 100 Best Companies to Work For. “Employees rave about their mission, the culture, and the famous perks of the Plex: bocce courts, a bowling alley, eyebrow shaping (for a fee) in the New York office,” Fortune wrote.

Microsoft’s Mango Update Sweetens Windows Phone
Hoping to revive its flagging smartphone efforts, Microsoft recently released a significant update for its Windows Phone software. Dubbed Windows Phone 7.5 but code-named Mango, the new software, which just started to show up in new phones, adds a slew of new features. They include the ability to run and easily switch between multiple applications and to quickly scan bar codes and even book covers for more information about physical products, as well as deeper integration with social networks such as Facebook and Twitter

Facebook, Greenpeace in Truce Over Data Centers
Facebook and Greenpeace have called a truce over a clean energy feud that had the environmental group using the social network’s own platform to campaign against it. Greenpeace and Facebook said Thursday that they will work together to encourage the use of renewable energy instead of coal. Last year, Facebook opened a data center in Prineville, Oregon, using the area’s cool nights and dry air to save energy while keeping its systems from overheating.

Always up for tweaking the breathless blogging that passes for technology journalism in Silicon Valley, ValleyWag this week offered to put up some real money if anyone could provide concrete evidence of the tablet computer that most Apple watchers expect CEO Steve Jobs to unveil at a Jan. 27 press happening in San Francisco. “We’ve had enough of trying to follow all the speculation around Apple’s impending tablet,” ValleyWag’s Gabriel Snyder wrote in a blog post announcing the Apple Tablet Scavenger Hunt.

T-Mobile Drops Nexus One Price $100
In the latest in the Nexus One saga, Google and T-Mobile have made changes to the pricing policy for the controversial device. The companies are lowering the price of the Nexus One by $100 for some existing customers. The new pricing paradigm means T-Mobile subscribers who are eligible can get the Nexus One for $279 instead of $379.
